Injured student airlifted to hospital from Croagh Patrick after multi-agency rescue

Mayo Mountain Rescue and the Coast Guard came to the assistance of a young student who fell while walking down Croagh Patrick and was hospitalised yesterday.

The voluntary organisation, who provide 24 hour 999 and 112 emergency cover on the hills and mountains of the county, said the incident happened on Wednesday afternoon.

A spokesman said their full team attended a callout today at 1.30pm to assist a member of a school group who were climbing Croagh Patrick.

"A young student fell while descending the summit cone and sustained a head injury.

"MMRT responded and requested assistance from Coast Guard Rescue- 118 helicopter.

"The young man was quickly located, treated by R-118 medic and, with help from MMRT, winched aboard R-118 helicopter for transport to Mayo University Hospital," he added.

The rescue operation was stood down at 3pm and Mayo Mountain Rescue said they "wish this young man a very successful recovery".
