Mayo Traveller Movement launches healthcare project

The newly established Mayo Traveller Movement officially launched its new primary healthcare project last week at its head office in Castlebar Parish Centre. The event was attended by over 200 people, including Traveller families, community representatives, and agencies from across the county.
The launch was formally opened by Senator Eileen Flynn, the first Traveller woman elected to the Oireachtas, alongside representatives from the HSE and Galway Traveller Movement. Their presence underlined the importance of collaborative work in tackling long-standing health inequalities faced by the Traveller community.
The project is designed to promote health and wellbeing while addressing the barriers that Travellers continue to experience when accessing healthcare. By building a bridge between the Traveller community and mainstream health services, the project aims to improve health outcomes, provide support, and foster greater trust and understanding.
Speaking at the event, representatives emphasised the value of peer-led initiatives. Members of the Traveller community will play a central role in delivering health information and support, ensuring that services are culturally appropriate, accessible, and effective.
The atmosphere at the launch was one of pride, solidarity, and hope. Families and agencies came together not only to celebrate this important step forward but also to reaffirm their commitment to building a more inclusive health service.
The Mayo Traveller Movement has advocated for equality, and this new project represents a significant milestone in addressing the health needs of Travellers in the county.
