The proposed extension would see 70 additional beds at Mayo University Hospital.
It will be years before the proposed extension to the emergency department at Mayo University Hospital (MUH) is completed, it has been revealed. The extension would see 70 additional beds at MUH.
Assistant National Director of HSE Capital and Estates, Joe Hoare, told a meeting of the Regional Health Forum West that planning permission was granted for the Emergency Department and Acute Medical Admissions Unit project at MUH on March 11. There are multiple phases needed to deliver this project, with the first enabling works due to commence by mid-2024. Construction of the main building extension is due to start in mid-2025.
“A capital submission including a project brief needs to be completed defining the scope of the project and the supporting business case," he said. "It is anticipated this would be done during 2024. A design team will then need to be appointed to progress the design, statutory approvals and tendering processes before any construction works can commence."
Chief Operating Officer of Saolta University Health Care Group, Ann Cosgrove, said it would be "years" before there is a new ward block on site.
