Bed occupancy in the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar stands at 95%.

Responding to queries from Cllr Michael Kilcoyne at the recent meeting of the Regional Health Forum West and Northwest, Area Health Manager Mary Warde said the facility has an occupancy of 92 beds.

"Of these, 65 are designated long-term care beds, which are divided into two units, 26 are short term beds and one respite bed. The short-term beds are operated and managed by the Older Persons Services, supported by medical clinical governance by the consultant in Mayo University Hospital.

"St John’s Ward is governed by Mayo University Hospital and has 34 beds, which currently has 95% occupancy, as against 88% occupancy in December 2025.”

Cllr Kilcoyne said 95% occupancy was excellent, but added: “We could do with a whole lot more beds there."

Regional Executive Officer Tony Canavan agreed that extra capacity is needed in Mayo.
