Agency staff numbers at Mayo University Hospital revealed
There were 26 agency staff at MUH in the first half of this year.
There were 26 agency staff employed at Mayo University Hospital in the first half of this year, including 10 consultants.
A meeting of the HSE Forum West last month revealed that MUH spent over €7.5m on agency staff in 2023 and has spent a further €4.4m in the first seven months of 2024.
A Freedom of Information request released to the Western People revealed that the hospital had 26 agency staff employed at the end of June 2024.
Agency staff, also known as temporary agency workers, are employees who have an agreement with an agency to work for someone else.
Of the 26 agency staff, 10 worked as consultants, four of whom worked in Medicine, two in both Paediatrics and the Emergency Department and one in both Anaesthesia and Radiology.
Nine agency staff worked as Registrars or Senior House Officers (SHOs). 4.5 were assigned to the Emergency Department, two to Medicine, 1.5 to Paediatrics and one to Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The remaining agency staff worked as clerical officers (4), nursing staff (2), security staff (1) and assistant staff (1).
The total number of agency staff employed at MUH at the end of 2023 was 28.6.
