Hazardous exit at Mayo GAA pitch still not resolved

Cllr Damien Ryan

A local councillor has accused Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) of failing to honour its commitment to realign a dangerous exit from the grounds of a South Mayo GAA club.

Cllr Damien Ryan told last week's meeting of Mayo County Council's strategic policy committee (SPC) for roads that the exit at Kilmaine GAA club is hazardous for motorists due to a lack of visibility onto a road where the speed limit is 100km per hour.

“This matter has been on the agenda for a long time and TII had given a firm commitment it would meet us half-way in solving the exit from the GAA pitch. The municipal district has stepped up to the mark and funded the acquisition of the ground. TII was to fund the alignment."

After learning that there had been no response from TII or the Department of Transport on the matter, Cllr Ryan called for a meeting with TII and was backed by committee cathaoirleach Cllr Annie May Reape.

Mayo Co Council's Acting Head of Roads, Conrad Harley, said the council was working with TII on the project but that there was a “particular issue with adjacent land” which had been holding things up but that was now "almost fully resolved". He promised to come back to members with an update.
