Golf club reaches agreement over course ownership

Ballina Golf Club has reached an agreement with the company that had been administering its borrowings to reclaim ownership of its 18-hole course.

The club, which was founded in 1910 and is fully owned by members, obtained a bank loan in 2004 for a significant clubhouse development, which was fully completed.

However, the financial crash in 2008 led to a fall in membership and a resulting loss of income. This ultimately resulted in the original loan being restructured and it became due in full in 2024.

Last March, Bank of Ireland sold Ballina Golf Club’s loan to Pepper Finance, a loan management and servicing company, putting the club’s future in uncertainty.

However, the club continued to actively participate in negotiations over the settlement of the loan with Pepper Finance and has now announced that a resolution has been secured.

Through a combination of loans and generous donations from members and local businesses, the club has successfully raised 80% of the required funds and with continued support, is confident it will reach the full amount by the February 28 deadline.

In a statement, the club said it was extremely grateful to anyone who supported it during this time and is delighted to have reached a resolution to the situation.

“We thank everyone who has supported us on this journey and encourage the local community to rally behind us in these final steps to securing the future of Ballina Golf Club,” said club chairperson Gerard Mulligan who emphasised the importance of the golf club to Ballina.

“Ballina Golf Club is deeply rooted in the local community, promoting the sport of golf for all ages and skill levels. The course is not only a cherished amenity for residents but also a key tourist attraction, contributing significantly to the economic vibrancy of Ballina.”

The news comes at a significant time in Ballina Golf Club’s history as they mark 100 years at their facility in the Mossgrove area of the town.
