'Game-changer' project for Mayo town is approved for funding

The Killala Tower Hub site, which is to receive funding for redevelopment.

The North Mayo town of Killala is to receive funding of €49,875 for the redevelopment of the Tower Hub project in the centre of the town. The funding was part of a €2.6m investment from government in Town Centre First projects announced last week. The Killala project is one of three in Mayo to receive money.

In Killala, the funding will be used to redevelop the old Tower Bar property on Market St, which was purchased by the community in the past few years. The funding will allow the local community, in conjunction with Mayo County Council, to develop plans for the building and bring this project through design and to planning permission.

Local Fine Gael Cllr Jarlath Munnelly welcomed the funding announcement.

"The redevelopment of the Tower Bar site is a central project in the Killala Town Centre First plan. The local community have ambitious plans to turn this building into a resource for the local community, including an interactive visitor experience that will harness the very rich heritage that Killala and its surrounds has, making this a key visitor destination in North Mayo."

Cllr Munnely said he was delighted that this project is getting funding to start on the road to development, and that a lot of work has gone into this project, which could be "a gamechanger" for Killala.

“I’m delighted that the government has backed this project for Killala. This funding will help bring this project to the planning permission stage. This project has the potential to be a gamechanger for Killala, helping to create a state-of-the-art visitor experience in the town that will capture the very rich heritage that Killala and the surrounding area has. Killala has been crying out for a landmark visitor experience for years – today is the start of this being developed.”

Minister of State Dara Calleary also welcomed the news.

"This is a further example of sustained investment in Killala in recent years as we move towards unlocking its undisputed potential. With such development comes a certain level of disruption and I want to thank all business owners and residents for their continued patience as these projects move through the construction phase."
