Community rallies behind fundraiser to repatriate body of Belmullet café owner

A fundraiser to repatriate the body of a well-known Belmullet café owner to his native Poland has received almost 400 donations since being set up 2 days ago.
There has been great sadness in the Erris region following the passing of Marcin Grzegorcyzk, who ran the Bike Café on American Street in Belmullet.
The Polish native passed away in Galway Hospital after a long and difficult battle with illness.
Marcin was a popular figure in the local community and many fond tributes were paid to him in the Western People comments section.
"He was a ray of sunshine, even on the days when it was lashing rain. Belmullet has lost a special man, who will be sorely missed," one said.
"Marcin Grzegorczyk was loved by everyone in the Erris community. We will all miss him so much," added another.
Friends of Marcin have set up a Go Fund Me fundraiser to assist his young daughter Julka repatriate his body home to Poland.
“Marcin passed away peacefully with Julka by his side — his daughter, the most important person in his life, his greatest pride and inspiration,” said fundraiser organiser Katarzyna Noworyta.
“Our biggest wish is to bring him home to Poland, where he can be laid to rest close to his family and friends, and where Julka can say goodbye to her dad properly.”
Organisers said the cost of repatriating Marcin from Ireland to Poland, which includes paperwork, funeral home fees, transport and funeral expenses is more than they are able to manage.
“Everything happened so quickly, and none of us were prepared for the financial burden that comes with arranging bringing a loved one home,” she said.
Katarzyna added that any funds remaining would allow them to keep the Bike Café running.
“His café was not just a business. It was a place he created with passion, warmth and heart.
“A place where people met, talked, laughed and felt welcome. We know how much it meant to him, and how much pride he took in every little detail and in every cup of coffee he made for you.”
In just two days, the fundraiser has been supported by almost 400 people and has raised over €11,500 highlighting the deep love and respect that the Belmullet and wider communities had for Marcin.
“We are incredibly grateful for every donation, every share, every message and every kind word during this heartbreaking time," added Katarzyna.
“Please help us bring Julka’s dad home.”
