The Fine Gael selection convention for the Westport Local Electoral Area took place recently in the Knockranny House Hotel, Westport, and was guest-chaired by Galway Senator Seán Kyne.
Westport native Keira Keogh alongside sitting councillor Peter Flynn were nominated and ratified as candidates for the 2024 local elections.
Keira is a self-employed behaviour consultant and works with young clients with a neurodiverse background. Outside of work, she is a member of Junior Chamber International (JCI), which is a membership-driven organisation of dedicated and enterprising young leaders.
At the convention, Keira explained that with her experience, passion, and dedication to the service of others, she believes that she can be a fresh energetic voice for her community. Her family run the popular business The Helm at Westport’s Quay.
Peter Flynn served on Westport Town Council for 10 years before becoming a county councillor in 2009. He is a certified accountant (FCCA) and has his own consulting business. Outside of work, Peter is involved in many sporting clubs in Westport and plays an active role in a number of local voluntary organisations.
Chairman of the Mayo Fine Gael Executive, former councillor, Oireachtas member, and MEP, Jim Higgins welcomed the news adding that it was a strong ticket for next year’s elections.
“I am delighted to welcome Keira Keogh onto the ticket to stand alongside Peter Flynn, who has proven to be a very effective local representative over the years. I believe this is a very strong ticket for the Westport area, and the executive looks forward to working with them both to maximise the vote for the party in the area in next year’s local election.”
Fine Gael will be looking to regain the seat it lost in the Westport area in the last local elections in 2019. Currently, the area has two Independent candidates, Christy Hyland and John O’Malley, who are both former Fine Gael councillors.
