Exciting new era for Mayo national school

Cuilmore National School in Newport.

Cuilmore National School in Newport will transition to a Community National School (CNS) under the patronage of the Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB), starting from the 2026/2027 academic year, marking an important new chapter in the school’s history and its role within the local community.

This transition represents a significant milestone for primary education in Mayo and marks the first Community National School under MSLETB patronage. The Community National School model is aimed at enhancing the existing excellence in education that Cuilmore National School has provided since 1942.

This positive development will support the school in strengthening its inclusive ethos, expanding educational opportunities, and meeting the evolving needs of families in Mayo. The transition will see Cuilmore National School join the national network of Community National Schools, providing a multi-denominational, inclusive primary education option for parents and pupils in the region.

The ethos of the new Cuilmore Community National School will be grounded in the MSLETB and Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI) core values of excellence in education, respect, care, equality and community, ensuring a welcoming, respectful, and supportive learning environment for children of all backgrounds.

An open night will take place on February 10th from 7pm to 8.30pm at the school (F28 VF68). This event offers parents, families, and members of the local community the opportunity to learn more about the school, meet staff, and ask questions about what becoming a Community National School means in practice. Prospective parents are also invited to visit the school during school hours from February 9th to 13th. These visits will provide families with a chance to see the school in action, speak with staff and learn about the Community National School ethos, which will continue to support students to thrive at Cuilmore National School.
