The son of a well-known and much-loved retired school principal is preparing to run two marathons to help raise money for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, after his dad was diagnosed with the brain disorder.

David Lynn from Ballina has explained that his dad Hugh Lynn, former principal of The Quay NS and a primary teacher for 41 years, has Alzheimer’s, as had other members of the Lynn Family in the past.

David will run his first marathon on Sunday, May 24 at Lough Cutra Castle, Galway and the Dublin Marathon in October, and is appealing for donations towards the Alzheimer Society of Ireland.

Describing his dad Hugh as an “absolutely amazing man and father”, David Lynn said: “I am heartbroken as this disease begins to take over, and I know my mother will need the support of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland in the years ahead. She is caring for dad, and you won’t meet a more selfless or caring woman.

“I am running these marathons for him, to raise much needed funds in his honour.

“Alzheimer’s is a cause very close to my heart, and one that has deeply affected my family. Both of my grandparents on the Lynn side had Alzheimer’s,” explained David who because of that, had already helped raise over €100,000 for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland since 2016 through concerts at which he performed in his previous career as an opera singer.

“I’m not doing much singing anymore, so I’m running instead!” says David, adding that he was also running to support other families affected by dementia.
