New publican's licence is granted for renowned late-night venue

Cox's Bar and Restaurant at Tucker Street in Castlebar.

A new publican’s licence has been granted for a well-known former late-night venue in order to pave the way for its sale.

The certificate of publican’s licence was granted to Thomas Maloney who owns Cox’s bar and restaurant on Tucker Street in Castlebar.

The matter came before a sitting of Castlebar Circuit Court.

Mr Maloney is the owner of the property and leased the premises to the former licence holder before its closure, The popular bar closed in April this year and was put on the market soon after. The court heard Mr Maloney acquired the property around 20 years ago. Cox's has been one of the best-known establishments in Mayo since the 1990s and its closure was greeted with great sadness.

Dr Laura Byrne, the barrister representing the applicant, explained to the court that the previous licence had lapsed unbeknownst to Mr Maloney. She said when her client learned of this the premises ceased trading soon after.

Dr Byrne said it is Mr Maloney’s intention to sell the entire premises as a going concern. The court heard he operates pubs in the United Kingdom, but Mr Maloney was not involved in the day-to-day running of Cox’s and rented the bar to the previous licence holder.

Judge Eoin Garavan approved the granting of the seven-day ordinary licence and wished Mr Maloney well in his plans to sell the property.

The bar, restaurant and late-night venue occupies a large site of approximately 250 square metres and is currently being sold by Kevin Beirne Auctioneers.
