Garda Inspector Shane Fitzmaurice has been given a warm welcome at his first appearance at Castlebar District Court.
Solicitor Gary Mulchrone welcomed Inspector Fitzmaurice on behalf of the Mayo Solicitors Bar Association, describing him as a very capable and talented officer, who served as a Garda Sergeant in Claremorris before being promoted.
He added that Inspector Fitzmaurice was returning to his home patch as has strong Castlebar connections, having played for Castlebar Mitchels from underage right up to senior level. He also donned the Mayo jersey and played basketball for Castlebar.
Mr Mulchrone also noted that the name Fitzmaurice was not new to Castlebar, as Inspector Fitzmaurice is son of retired Gda Donal Fitizmaurice, who served the area for over 20 years.
Judge Deirdre Gearty congratulated Inspector Fitzmaurice on his promotion and said she was in no doubt that he would maintain the high standards set by all members of the An Garda Síochána in Mayo.
