A Romanian man has been jailed for five months after stealing cosmetic and skincare items valued at more than €500 from a Ballina pharmacy.
Elvis Dulea, aged 49, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty at Ballina District Court to a charge of theft.
Gda Rebecca Fearon told the court that Dulea entered Boots on Pearse Street at around 3.56pm on February 5 last and went to the cosmetic and skincare section. A store manager approached him and asked if he needed any help. Dulea aggressively responded 'no' and subsequently left the store.
CCTV footage was examined and showed Dulea taking items from the shelf, concealing them under his coat, and leaving the store without paying at 4.09pm. Gda Fearon said Dulea was identified through Garda enquiries. The total value of the items was €591.25 and the property was not recovered.
The court heard that Dulea has four previous convictions for theft.
Solicitor Peter Loftus said his client, a native of Romania with no address in Ireland, accepted his involvement and pleaded guilty at the first opportunity. Mr Loftus said there was no reality of compensation being repaid.
Judge Sandra Murphy imposed a five-month prison sentence.
