Man stole alcohol from supermarket

Castlebar District Court heard that the defendant failed to co-operate with the investigation.

A man has been fined for stealing alcohol from a Castlebar supermarket.

Andrzej Dziewulski, aged 57, of Castlegrove, Castlebar pleaded guilty at the local district court to theft.

Gda John McNamara told the court he received a call on October 28, 2021, from security staff at Tesco, Castlebar who had detained a male about the theft of two bottles of alcohol with a value of €43. The theft had actually occurred five days earlier on October 23.

CCTV footage showed the defendant placing the alcohol in a bag. He then proceeded to the self-checkout where he paid for a number of smaller items but not the bottles of alcohol.

Gda McNamara spoke to Dziewulski, who denied stealing the alcohol. The garda told the court that Dziewulski did not cooperate with the investigation and that the stolen property was not recovered.

Solicitor Gary Mulchrone said his client previously worked in a local bakery. He had not come to Garda attention since the incident and had compensation for Tesco.

Judge Vincent Deane imposed a fine of €300.
