Man is jailed for headbutt attack on Westport street

The defendant pleaded guilty at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court.

A man has been jailed for a vicious attack.

Brandon O’Connor, aged 23, of Chestnut Grove, Westport, pleaded guilty at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court to the assault.

O’Connor headbutted the injured party and broke his nose in the early hours of December 10, 2022. The incident was captured on CCTV. The parties were not known to each other but there was a verbal altercation in a pub earlier in the night.

O’Connor arrived at the Garda station in Westport following the incident. He was accompanied by two friends of the injured party with Gda Paul Harte telling the court he may have been trying to flee from the other men.

In a victim impact statement, the complainant said his nose may never be the same following the headbutt attack.

O’Connor has three previous convictions for robbery, aggravated burglary, and violent disorder and has served time in prison before.

Barrister Mark Ryan said his client has substance abuse issues with his addictions starting at the age of 12. O’Connor apologised for his actions, saying he was intoxicated on the night and couldn’t remember what he had done.

“This man is violent and dangerous,” stated Judge Eoin Garavan.

The judge imposed a two-and-a-half-year jail term, suspending the final 10 months.
