Man faces additional charges over Ballina barricade incident

The defendant was charged with the additional offences before a sitting of Castlebar District Court. 

A man has been sent forward for trial for offences related to a barricade incident in Ballina last September.

Polish national Mateusz Batiuk, of Tone House, Tone St, Ballina appeared before Castlebar District Court last Wednesday where he was newly charged with false imprisonment, assault on a Garda, criminal damage and possession of a knife at a premises in Ballina on September 27, 2023.

Sgt Pat McCann said he charged the defendant with the new offences before the court hearing. The Director of Public Prosecutions is seeking trial on indictment 

Legal aid was extended Mr Batiuk’s solicitor Cathy McDarby for the new matters. Ms McDarby also made a statements order.

No bail application was forthcoming.

Judge Fiona Lydon remanded Mr Batiuk in custody to appear before Ballina District Court via video link on February 13.
