Lorry driver in court over fatal accident

A man has pleaded guilty to careless driving causing the death of a Mayo pensioner.
Mihail Tanasevici, aged 41, of Woodford Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, appeared before a sitting of Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court.
The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge of careless driving causing the death of Westport woman Maureen Hopkins.
Mrs Hopkins, of Rosmoney, Carrowholly, Westport and formerly of Bagenalstown, Co Carlow was aged in her 70s. She died after being hit by a lorry in the car park of SuperValu in Westport on June 6, 2024.
The court heard Tanasevici, a Romanian national, was driving a work vehicle when the fatal collision with the pedestrian occurred.
Barrister Mark Ryan, representing Tanasevici, said this was a “very unfortunate event". He told the court his client’s vehicle was travelling at 2km per hour at the point of impact.
Tanasevici has no previous convictions and remains employed.
A probation report was sought by the man’s legal representative.
Judge Eoin Garavan adjourned the case for mention to February 9, 2026, with sentencing to take place on March 6 next year.
