Judge tells defendant to 'do the EuroMillions'
The defendant pleaded guilty at Ballina District Court.
A man was told to “do the EuroMillions” on his way back to prison.
Shane Muldoon, of St Patrick’s Estate, Ballina pleaded guilty to a breach of the Public Order Act when he appeared before the local district court last Friday.
The defendant is in custody on other matters and was brought to court from Castlerea Prison.
Muldoon indicated that he wanted the matter finalised and was willing to plead guilty despite the absence of legal representation due to the ongoing solicitors' strike.
The court was told that on October 19, 2025, Gardaí responded to a report of a disturbance involving a male at St Patrick’s Estate.
Sgt Fiona Farrell said Muldoon was “clearly under the influence of an intoxicant”. He was arrested for his own safety and the safety of others.
Muldoon has 30 previous convictions, including five for public order matters.
Judge Alan Mitchell said given his guilty plea in the absence of legal representation he was prepared to offer Muldoon a “big discount”.
“This is your lucky day,” said the judge.
Judge Mitchell imposed a sentence of two days in prison in lieu of a €50 fine.
“You are going to be in prison anyway,” said Judge Mitchell.
The judge joked that the prison van might stop on the way back to Castlerea so Muldoon could “do the EuroMillions".
