'High-end' clothing items were stolen from Mayo store
The case was heard at Ballina District Court.
A man who stole 'high-end' clothing from a Ballina retailer has been given a suspended prison sentence.
Tom Ward, 33 Shannon Valley, Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, pleaded guilty at Ballina District Court to theft.
Sgt Fiona Farrell told the court that Ward entered Sports Direct, Pearse St, Ballina, on October 25 last and removed security tags from a number of "high-end clothing goods".
The total value of the property was €1,650. Ward exited the store and an alarm activated. He was later identified as the culprit on CCTV. He was interviewed by Gardaí on November 12 and made admissions to having committed the theft. The property was not recovered.
The court heard that Ward has a number of previous convictions for theft offences.
Solicitor Peter Loftus said his client wished to have an opportunity to pay compensation to Sports Direct. However, Judge Ciaran Liddy said he would not give Ward this chance because he had since the end of last year to come up with compensation.
“He has had plenty of time to come up with it,” he said.
Judge Liddy imposed a six-month suspended sentence.
