Drunk woman was dancing on top of fishing boat

The defendant pleaded guilty to the offence.

A Ballina woman was arrested for public intoxication after she was found dancing on a boat in Belmullet.

Rachel Dervan, Spire View Apartments, Pawn Office Lane, Ballina pleaded guilty at Belmullet District Court to public intoxication.

Gda Inspector Dermot Butler told the court that Gardaí received a report at 2.30pm on June 25 last of an intoxicated female, later identified as Dervan, who had fallen into the water at the Docks in Belmullet. When Gardaí arrived at the scene, she was dancing on top of a fishing boat. She was arrested for her own safety.

The court was told the defendant has seven previous convictions.

Dervan had no legal representative present due to the ongoing withdrawal of legal aid services arising from a dispute between solicitors and the Department of Justice. Most cases before the court were adjourned, but Dervan told Judge Michael Connellan that she wished to have the case dealt with quickly. She said she was sorry for what had occurred.

Judge Connellan imposed a fine of €200.
