Castlebar man fined for spitting at garda

Castlebar District Court heard that the defendant is very remorseful.
A Castlebar man who spat at a garda has been convicted of assault.
Patrick McDonagh, aged 29, of Lenanasillagh, Glenisland, pleaded guilty at the local district court to committing the offence.
The court heard that Gda Liam Dever and others attended an incident at 11.40pm on March 27, 2023, in Glenisland. A relative of McDonagh’s was being arrested and the defendant intervened and attempted to obstruct Gda Dever in the course of his duty.
McDonagh was subsequently arrested and brought to Castlebar Garda Station.
Solicitor Gary Mulchrone said his client "foolishly intervened when another person was being arrested". Mr Mulchrone said McDonagh wished to sincerely apologise to Gda Dever.
"He is ashamed of his behaviour and very remorseful.”
Judge Vincent Deane stressed it was a serious offence, but decided a jail term was not appropriate and instead imposed a fine of €500.
