Belmullet man charged with causing criminal damage to doctor's surgery

Judge Fiona Lydon remanded the defendant on bail.

A man has been charged with causing criminal damage to a GP's surgery.

Rhys Brett, of 8 Church Road, Drom Árd, Belmullet appeared before the local district court last Wednesday where he was charged with seven counts of criminal damage on August 17, 2023, at Church Rd, Belmullet.

Gda Insp Dermot Butler told the court that the prosecution will allege that the defendant drew male genitalia on a window of An Builin Blasta café, in a nearby playground, and on the surgery of Dr Keith Swanick. Swastikas were also drawn on Dr Swanick’s surgery, while graffiti was inscribed on several road signs on Church Rd.

Gda Ian Kelly said he arrested Brett at Father Mulhern Crescent, Belmullet on January 4th last and later charged him. After the first charge, the defendant replied: “I am very sorry, I will not do it again.” He reiterated his apology when other charges were read to him.

Defending solicitor Michael Bohan sought and was granted the relevant witness statements.

Judge Fiona Lydon remanded Brett on continuing bail to May 8, 2024.
