Councillors pay tribute to former Taoiseach John Bruton

A minute's silence was held by councillors for former Taoiseach John Bruton who was a regular visitor to Mayo.
Members of Mayo County Council stood for a minute's silence at their monthly meeting last week in memory of former Taoiseacch John Bruton.
Ballinrobe-based Cllr Michael Burke asked for a book of condolence to be opened for the former Fine Gael leader, who served as Taoiseach from 1994 until 1997.
Cllr Burke stated Mr Bruton was a highly influential political figure who had “huge connections” with Mayo through his wife Finola (nee Gill), a native of Westport.
“He visited this county on many occasions, including the races in Ballinrobe," said Cllr Burke. "His uncle was married to a lady from Ballinrobe and his commitment to Mayo was very big."
Cllr Burke described Mr Bruton as a statesman who made a significant positive impact on Irish society.
“John was very much his own man and a man full of ideas. He respected everybody he met and everyone mattered to him,” he added.
