Councillor wants timeframes on road safety projects

Cllr Michael Loftus while Cathaoirleach of Ballina Municipal District last year.

A Crossmolina councillor has queried why Mayo Co Council does not provide timelines for projects in relation to safety measures and speed controls on roads, particularly around schools, saying it is frustrating to be left waiting for schemes that were promised long ago.

Cllr Michael Loftus told last week's meeting of Ballina Municipal District: "There is never a timeframe on any of these jobs we discuss. We need to know when they are going to happen. We never get anything from government as to when will things be decided on. Every few meetings we are told jobs will be done once the Ballina Local Area Plan is done but when do we get the reply back that says money will be available to do a job?

"We have a minister in Ballina town and a minister in Castlebar, so I am asking for a timeframe for projects that are approved and a letter to say will this be funded by the council or the government, because if we’re not going to get some of these projects, we need to stop talking about them and about saving people’s lives on roads.”
