Councillor calls for tough response over stolen and damaged road signs

Cllr Damien Ryan said it's time for the council to get tough on stolen and damaged signage.

Mayo councillors have voiced concern over the lack of lineage on the county's roads as well as damaged and stolen signs.

Cllr Damien Ryan told a meeting of Mayo Co Council's Roads Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) that lineage and signage are "the poor relations" when it comes to roads and must be improved. He said there are major problems with damaged and stolen road signs and it costs a lot to replace them.

“We need to be serious about enforcement and we may need to make an example out of someone. Signage can be critical for the prevention of a serious accident or fatality."

Cllr John O’Malley said the sign on the N59 near Midwest Furniture in Kilmeena was damaged in the recent storm and ended up on the road. The sign was later taken down and not replaced. Cllr O’Malley said this should not have happened as the sign is new.

The council's Head of Roads Paul Dolan agreed the sign should not have been damaged so quickly and said he would look into it. Mr Dolan added there is a body of work needed to be done over the next number of years to replenish the lineage on roads and he intends to allocate €200,000 towards this work via the council's Roadworks Scheme.
