Council gives view on pedestrian crossing at Aldi store

Safe crossings are included in the plans for Castlebar.
Mayo County Council is aiming to progress the first phase of the Castlebar Local Transport Plan which will see a new footpath and safe crossing points introduced,
"We expect to be signing the contract in the next two weeks for the consultants to develop the detailed designs for Proposal One of the Castlebar Local Transport Plan (LTP) and to take it through to construction," stated the council in a brief to councillors. "This element of the plan has relatively few constraints impeding its delivery, but it will be subject to NTA funding approval."
Proposal One will connect the town from North to South along the R309, with extensions along the R308 to the Castlebar Train Station and towards the town core. The plan set out at a high level the proposed improvement in Active Travel Infrastructure at Knockphunta, which includes a new footpath and safe crossing points.
The impact on traffic due to the existing pedestrian crossing at Aldi store was raised at a recent meeting of the municipal council.
"The current location of the crossing is in all likelihood where people would try to cross the road regardless of if the crossing was moved to an alternative location. The roundabout/junction will also form part of the consultants' detailed design under Proposal One," councillors were told.
