COMMUNITY NOTES: BALLINA - WESTERN PEOPLE (NOVEMBER 12 EDITION)

Eoghan Durkan and Neil Rafter, both of whom completed their Leaving Certificate examinations in St Muredach’s College, Ballina last summer, have been awarded the 2024 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) Birrane Bursary.

The bursary is named in honour of Martin Birrane, the late Ballina-born property developer, racing driver and former owner of Mondello Park Racing Circuit, also a former student of St Muredach’s College in the 1950s.

The award provides €3,500 for Eoghan and Neil for each year at university over the course of three years.

For Eoghan Durkan, this is his second scholarship. The young Enniscrone man was the recipient of the prestigious Naughton Foundation Scholarship, announced some weeks ago. That scholarship is worth €24,000 over the course of his degree.

Eoghan is studying Science at University College Dublin while Neil is studying Engineering at University of Limerick.
