Concern that criminality is 'pulling' Mayo town back

There are calls for additional Garda resources for Ballinrobe.
A South Mayo councillor has called for more Garda resources for Ballinrobe following a recent incident in which a firearm was used.
There was shock in the community after shots were fired in the grounds of a residence at the Lough Mask Road in Ballinrobe at around 10.45pm on Sunday, April 21, 2024.
No injuries were reported. The scene was preserved for a technical examination. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward. They are particularly interested in sightings of a motorbike in the area.
“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in these areas at these times are also asked to come forward," a statement from An Garda Síochána stated. "Anyone with any information is asked to contact Castlebar Garda Station on 094-9038200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
It is understood that the incident is connected to a long-standing feud.
Local Fianna Fáil councillor Damien Ryan has been calling for the appointment of a serious crimes detective for Ballinrobe and additional garda resources. He said the latest incident is a "serious escalation" of issues which have arisen in the past.
“A serious crime detective needs to be assigned to Ballinrobe Station and I think it is within their gift to do that. Given the statistics, the type of incidents, and the way that Ballinrobe is being portrayed this position needs to be assigned and without delay,” said Cllr Ryan.
Last year, a major Garda operation was launched in Ballinrobe in response to criminality in the area.
“There was a huge operation undertaken and it had a significant impact and created reassurance,” said Cllr Ryan.
However, he fears that Ballinrobe’s reputation will be tarnished unless the necessary full-time resources are put in place.
“It’s a prosperous town, a prosperous area but these types of incidents are pulling it back,” said Cllr Ryan.
