There is shock and sadness in south Mayo following the unexpected passing of a popular young woman over the weekend.

Warm tributes have been paid to Éilis Maloney of Currabuí, Ballinrobe following her passing on Saturday, December 28.

Éilis was a prominent and much-loved member of Ballinrobe GAA & LGFA Club, playing a leading role in reforming the club’s Junior LGFA team in the last number of years and was overwhelmingly endorsed as captain of the first adult ladies football team in Ballinrobe in over a quarter of a century. The club paid the following tribute to Éilis on their social media.

“Everything Éilis did, she did wholeheartedly and with positive intent. Her teammates in Ballinrobe LGFA all fondly recall her as a talented footballer, a loyal colleague and - above all - someone who always had a kind and generous word to say.”

“All in Ballinrobe GAA & LGFA will miss her dearly and remember her contribution to our club with fondness and gratitude.”

She also had a bright, aspiring career as a referee, becoming Ballinrobe GAA’s first accredited female referee of adult games.

The club intends to form a guard of honour at Éilis’ funeral. Éilis also represented The Neale with distinction for many years.

Éilis is deeply treasured and regretted by her parents Carmel and Vincent, her brother Seán and her sister Claire, Sean's fiancé Niamh & Claire's boyfriend Cillian. Éilis will be lovingly remembered by all of her aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family, her neighbours and a very wide circle of friends.
