"Cloud over Carrowholly" after woman's tragic death

A communiity is in mourning following the tragic death of Maureen Hopkins.

The funeral took place at the weekend of a woman who died after being struck by a truck in a supermarket car park.

The incident happened in a supermarket car park in Westport before 12pm on Thursday and claimed the life of Westport woman Maureen Hopkins.

Westport woman Maureen Hopkins, who was a pedestrian and aged in her 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

The funeral mass of of Mrs Hopkins, of Rossmoney, Carrowholly, Westport, and late of Bagnalstown, Carlow, took place on Sunday.

Maureen will be sadly missed by her loving husband Chris, daughters Eimear, Niamh, Sinéad, Fiona and son Fergal, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, sister Ann Eustace (Myshall, Carlow), brother George Darcy (Bagnalstown), sister-in-law, brother-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Local councillor John O’Malley expressed his sympathy to the family following his re-election to Mayo County Council on Sunday night.

“There is a cloud over Carrowholly and a sadness,” said Cllr O’Malley.
