Claremorris LEA: Connolly misses out, O'Brien secures a big vote, Lawless and Gallagher elected for the first time

Cllr Patsy O'Brien has criticised what he has described as "fake news" and those who target councillors
Six councillors have been elected to the Claremorris Municipal District in the 2024 Mayo County Council elections. Four incumbent councillors have returned to the Council with two newcomers set to serve for the next five years.
Patsy O'Brien (Ind) topped the poll with 2,739 votes and was elected on the first count. Richard Finn (Ind) followed suit on the third count.
It took until the sixth count for Damien Ryan (FF) and Alma Gallagher (FG), a first-time candidate, to reach the quota and secure their election.
Tom Connolly (FG) was eliminated following the seventh count as the remaining surplus was not sufficient for him to catch up with either Paul Lawless (Aontu) or Michael Burke (FG).
Therefore, Lawless was elected, the first Aontú candidate to be elected to Mayo County Council and so too was Burke.
