Castlebar Men's Shed need help in finding premises for growing numbers

Castlebar Men's Shed need to secure a bigger premises.

A plea has been issued to Mayo County Council to help Castlebar Men's Shed overcome accommodation issues.

Growing numbers mean the organisation is struggling to locate its membership at its current home on the Atlantic Technological University campus in the county town. The Men's Shed has been told expansion of its base on the campus is not possible.

Local election candidate Harry Barrett has implored Mayo County Council to step in.

"I have spoken to the members and was very taken by what they have done for local men's mental health and by their ambitious plans. However, they are struggling to accommodate the growing needs and need room to expand. I have contacted management in the ATU and have been told that they will not agree to further expansion.

"I am calling now on Mayo County Council to work with Castlebar Men's Shed, to identify a suitable premises to allow these men to carry on their great work. The council is sitting on many derelict sites around the town, so it must be possible to identify one for their needs."

Mr Barrett said Castlebar Men's Shed is constantly giving back to the community and now require assistance.

"Castlebar Men's Shed is a vital source of help to other local community groups in our town and has always lent a hand whenever asked with local events. I think it is now our turn to help them, so I am calling on local councillors and on management inside the council to work with them now so that their future can be secured."
