Calls to change traffic flow system in Mayo town

The existing system of traffic flow in Ballinrobe is creating hazards for motorists and pedestrians, according to a local councillor.

Cathaoirleach of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District, Cllr Michael Burke, told the February meeting of the forum that there "is a major issue going in to Bowgate Street from the Neale Road".

"Part of that road is two-way and traffic from the filling station is coming up against people. There have been a few cases in the last few weeks of people almost being knocked down, so I propose whatever necessary be done to make it one-way.”

Cllr Burke added that traffic entering the Parish Centre carpark has no difficulty getting in, “but coming out it is totally blind and this needs to be looked at urgently". He also said that there has already been "a major incident" coming out of Cummins’ carpark.

"It’s a two-way system and people are cutting in on top of cars. We must look at it as it is too narrow for two cars or larger vehicles and lives are at risk as people cross there.”

Cllr Damien Ryan supported the call, adding: “The exit from the CBS carpark also needs to be looked at, there is zero visibility of pedestrians who have priority there as the footpath runs over where cars are coming out. Also, at Church Lane, something needs to be done to improve it and to look at the width of footpaths there as well.”
