Call for works at 'dangerous' junction in Mayo town
Cllr Michael Burke raised the issue.
A Ballinrobe councillor has called for a pedestrian crossing to be installed at the Abbey Street junction as a matter of urgency.
Cllr Michael Burke said Abbey Street, which is close to Homeland, Tesco and Ballinrobe Mart, is a very busy part of the town and is, at present, dangerous for pedestrians.
“It is a very busy corner, particularly on mart day on Wednesday. It is highly dangerous for kids going to school,” Cllr Burke told a meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District.
Cllr Damien Ryan said the pressure on this junction was growing all the time and it needs immediate attention while Cllr Patsy O’Brien also supported the motion and said he had previously submitted a notice of motion regarding this location two years ago and fears that these works are at a standstill.
“It has to be done, there are a huge volume of people using that area," Cllr O'Brien said.
In a written reply, Mayo County Council engineer John O’Malley said works at this location are associated with the Safe Routes to School programme and should progress with the National Transport Authority next year, starting with the appointment of consultants.
