Call for more funding for Wild Atlantic Way in Mayo
An Achill councillor has said it is crucial that funding is provided for the upkeep of the Wild Atlantic Way road network in Mayo.
Expressing concern about reported cutbacks on roadworks spending due to rising material costs, Cllr Paul McNamara told the June meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District that it was time to invest in the popular tourist attraction, which was first launched over a decade ago.
“The Wild Atlantic Way is a national treasure and being promoted around the world, but we never put any big money into it. It was always there with its beautiful scenery from the beginning of time. But we need to put money into it, and it is crucial to the future of Mayo that we do. It should have special status in relation to its upkeep so I propose we submit an application for extra money for this.”
The proposal was supported by Cllr Chris Maxwell and Cllr John O’Malley and agreed by all members.
