'Brand names we need' urges councillor as major business name opts for Mayo town
Cllr Richard Finn spoke on the matter.
A Claremorris councillor is urging Mayo County Council to grant planning permission to fast-food chain McDonald’s, which is seeking to open a branch in the town.
Independent Cllr Richard Finn made his comments at the January meeting of the authority, noting that there are “people willing to invest millions in the town”.
“There are millions of euro out there waiting to be spent in order to finish off dereliction projects; all we are waiting for is the go-ahead and planning permissions.
“I just hope we continue to get the help of the council and management as the proof is out there that the money is here locally and people are willing to invest in the town to remove dereliction if they are allowed to invest. All we are looking for in Claremorris is progress.”
Mr Finn said he was particularly keen to see progress on an application for McDonald’s in the town.
“Right now, there is an application in for a McDonald’s franchise to open in the town. I would not like to see us ending up with the same result we saw in terms of the response of the general public when the application was put in for Lidl three years ago.
“We want those developments, we need them. It is brand names we need in our towns or else we won’t have progress or any lifestyles either,” the long-serving councillor added.
