John O’Hara and Mark Duffy are the first councillors to be elected in Ballina.
With 2,374 and 2,325 votes respectively, O’Hara and Duffy surpassed the quota of 1,769.
Cllr O’Hara said he was delighted to be elected and thanked his election team and family.
“I knew by the way I got welcomed at the doors I wouldn’t be bottom of the pile but you never know what is going to happen. I never thought I’d get all this of a vote,” he said.
Cllr Duffy said he felt ‘blessed’ to poll so highly among Ballina voters once more.
“All we focused on was not putting any emotion into it but just working hard on the campaign. All of 2024 has been focused on June 7 for us. I’m blessed to have great support among the electorate and from an energetic campaign team.” He dismissed speculation that he would be interested in running in a General Election, due within the next year.
“All my focus has been on the local election and I’m allowing the dust to settle. We need to form our Council for the next five years, that’s what I’m focused on at the moment and it’s not something that needs to be considered at this stage.”
