From buzzing town centres to lively schoolyards and scenic community routes, Bike Week 2026 rolled through Mayo in style - and what a week it was!
With over 20 events and more than 600 participants, this year’s celebration of cycling brought energy, fun and community spirit to every corner of the county from Saturday, May 9 to Sunday, May 17.
Organised by Mayo Sports Partnership, in conjunction with local groups, clubs and national agencies, Bike Week once again delivered an exciting mix of activities to suit all ages and abilities, proving that cycling really is for everyone.
One of the standout highlights was the Fireride Pop-Up Cycling Activation at The Mall in Castlebar, which created a real buzz midweek. With expert rider coaches, a dynamic skills course and plenty of encouragement, participants got the chance to build confidence, sharpen their skills and enjoy the thrill of cycling in a fun and safe environment.
Across the county, communities came together to host everything from relaxed family cycles and inclusive Learn to Cycle sessions to hands-on bike maintenance workshops. Meanwhile, schools were full of laughter and excitement as the ever-popular lunchtime cycles returned, bringing pure joy to pupils as they spun their way through the school week.
Bike Week Mayo is a true grassroots success story, made possible by the dedication and enthusiasm of so many. Mayo Sports Partnership extends a huge thank you to all the schools, clubs, community groups and volunteers who hosted events, as well as to the Bike Week Steering Committee and key supporters including Mayo County Council Road Safety and Smarter Travel Offices, An Taisce Green Schools, An Garda Síochána and cycling groups across the county.
Most importantly, thank you to every single person who hopped on a bike and got involved - your energy and enthusiasm made the week what it was.
As part of a nationwide initiative led by the National Transport Authority, Bike Week continues to highlight the many benefits of cycling - for health, for the environment, and for bringing communities together.
Until next year, keep pedalling, keep smiling and most of all, keep enjoying the journey!
