Newly-elected Cllr Chris Maxwell is calling on Uisce Éireann to repair and upgrade the Louisburgh Sewerage Scheme so that "ongoing pollution of the waters along the West Mayo coastline" does not continue.

Cllr Maxwell told the July meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District: “It is an unfortunate situation that Carrowmore Beach is inaccessible for swimming due to pollution from our sewerage treatment plant and it is a disaster at this time of year especially. That scheme is out of date and we can’t have this happening again.

"Is there a plan going forward that the plant can be upgraded? The population in Louisburgh is growing and this needs to be talked about and planned.”

Council engineer Heather Gibbons said Uisce Éireann is responsible for the scheme but she can look for "any updates", adding: “Regarding Carrowmore, while the prohibition is in place on bathing, we carried out some indicative sampling last week and this showed that the water is okay. We have to do more sampling and would then hope to lift the prohibition notice.”
