Stay Gold, the musical, returns to stage in Ballina this August
If you were unlucky enough to miss the rollicking, foot stomping, snappy production of Stay Gold by St Muredach’s College, Ballina during its sell-out run last April, you will have a second chance to see it this August. Due to popular demand, the show will return to Ballina Arts Centre, on August 11 and 12, for a second run.
Inspired by SE Hinton’s The Outsiders, the show has been adapted for the stage by the St Muredach’s pupils themselves. Set in a sharply divided world, we see how tensions between the working-class Greasers and the wealthy Socs, shape the lives of the young people caught between them. The story follows the journey of Ponyboy Curtis, a thoughtful Greaser trying to make sense of loyalty, identity, and what it means to grow up in a world that seems stacked against him. With singing, dancing, and some truly great acting, this play is a real showcase of local talent, as evidenced by the sell-out run last spring.
The cast are also putting the fun back into fundraising, by using the show to raise funds for a new heating system for Ballina Arts Centre’s auditorium. Paul Cunningham of the Arts Centre said: “We’re extremely grateful and extremely excited to bring this brilliant production, full of music, energy, and heart, back to Ballina. The story is brought to life by a very talented cast and crew and we are very appreciative of their support of the Arts Centre. If you saw it last time, you’ll want to come back. If you missed out, now is your chance to grab tickets,” he said.
