A long-standing Ballina tourism business has been left in good hands following the retirement of its popular owners.

Joe and Phil Lenehan established the award-winning Belleek Park Caravan and Camping some 32 years ago. The couple have sold the facility to their former plumber Gerry Traynor who is set to continue its proud standing in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Joe and Phil were keen campers themselves before embarking on the business venture more than three decades ago.

“We built it from a green field,” explained Joe.

“We did a bit of caravanning and camping ourselves and felt there was a bit of a need in Ballina for it. Everyone said we were mad, we are probably still mad now!” he joked.

“Like any business, it took a while to build up but we are very proud of it,” said Phil.

“We are regarded as one of the best in Ireland,” Joe added.

The homegrown market was the couple’s first customers but over the years the park has attracted campers from all over the globe. They have seen huge changes with camper vans and camping is now never more popular.

“Caravanning was a bit of a dead duck in Ireland when we first started as far as Irish people were concerned but that all changed over the years,” said Joe.

The couple intend to tour around in their own motor home following their retirement.

“We have our own motor home and go on the odd busman’s holiday when we get the chance,” said Joe.

New owner Gerry Traynor was the site’s former plumber.

“He is very familiar with the place and we are very happy that a local family man is taking over,” explained Joe and Phil.
