A fresh appeal for information on the fatal road crash was issued.

Gardai investigating a fatal road traffic collision that occurred in Swinford have made a renewed appeal for information.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted following a two-car collision on the N5 at Cloonlara, near Swinford, at approximately 4.30pm on August 21, 2023.

A female passenger in her 70s was fatally injured in the crash

Much-loved Tourmakeady woman, Margaret (Peggy) Conway lost her life in the accident. Warm tributes were paid to the mother-of-five and grandmother-of-16 following her tragic death.

She was fondly remembered for her “great sense of humour.”

“She was a great friend to everyone, a great granny to all her grandchildren. They adored her,” said Fr Jarlath Heraty at her funeral mass.

The driver of the same car, a man in his 70s, and the driver and sole occupant of the second car, a man in his late 40s, were both seriously injured and required hospital treatment.

Investigating gardaí are renewing their appeal for witnesses. They are particularly appealing to the driver of a red saloon car that was in the vicinity at the time to contact them.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N5 between Swinford and Charlestown between 4 p.m. and 4.45 p.m., are asked to make this footage available to gardaí.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Swinford Garda Station on 094 9252990, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

The appeal comes in the wake of yet another fatality on Mayo's roads.
