Annie May Reape has asked the Mayo public to support her once again on Friday next when she runs for her seventh successive local elections.
The Ballina-based Fianna Fáil councillor has been in politics since 1991 and is still getting "great satisfaction” out of doing the job.
“I have enjoyed the canvassing so far and listening to people’s concerns,” Annie May told the
.“I like the local politics as you can see the work that needs to be done. I am proud of the work that we completed in Ballina and I want to continue to deal with these local issues.”
Cllr Reape blazed a trail for female politicians in the chamber of Mayo County Council and was the first female Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council. She remains the only woman to have held that prestigious position.
She describes herself as more energised than ever before. She is known for her personable nature and has long experience in politics, having worked in the constituency office of local TDs for over three decades.
“I want to thank my great team of workers who have supported me during the canvass,” Annie May stated.
“I enjoy the meetings that I attend and getting to raise the issues that have to be resolved.
“Being a councillor is my life and it certainly is a full-time job.”
Since the start of her political career, Annie May said that social media has become a big factor before local elections.
“I like social media and I use it but I enjoy going to the door before elections. We meet some great characters when we are out canvassing in rural and town areas. I make the best out of it as I can interact with the public which I appreciate.”
Annie May has been elected at every election since she began her journey in politics 33 years ago and aims to continue that proud record this year.
