Motorist recorded driving 172km/h in 120 zone in Dublin

A driver was recorded going 172 km/h in a 120km/h zone in Swords, Co Dublin.

This driver, on the M1 Greenfields, was recorded as part of the Roads Policing operation for the Bank Holiday weekend.

Other speeds recorded included a driver going 142km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N24 Belline & Rogerstown, Piltown, Co. Kilkenny.

Another motorist was going 127km/h in a 80km/h zone on the R428 Kylebeg, Stradbally, Co. Laois.

One motorist was going 126km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Waterford Road, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, while another was recorded going 115km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Clontarf Road in Dublin.

So far, over 1590 drivers have been detected for speeding offences during the first two days of the operation.

During the first two days, 200 drivers were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

39 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

. The total number of fatalities on Irish roads to date this year is 108.
