Mayo Volleyball Club continue push for promotion

Mayo Volleyball Club continued their impressive run of form with a thrilling 3–2 victory over Dalkey, pulling clear in the standings and strengthening their push for promotion.

Mayo started slowly but soon regained composure, bringing greater consistency and confidence to their play to take the opening set 25–22. That steadiness carried into the second set, although Dalkey responded with strong net play and well-timed serving to keep the pressure on. Ellena Coffey was introduced late in the set and made an immediate impact as Mayo edged it 25–23.

In the third set, it looked like the home side would close out the match as they built a 20–16 lead. However, a series of unforced errors, combined with determined play and strong serving from the South Dublin side, saw Dalkey battle back to take the set 25–23.

Dalkey maintained that momentum into the fourth set, applying sustained pressure with consistent play. Despite a spirited Mayo comeback, the visitors claimed the set 25–21, sending the match to a निर्णing fifth-set tie-break.

In the deciding set, Mayo were more clinical, building an early lead through Áine Joyce’s strong serving. Dalkey rallied with scrappy, determined play, but Mayo held firm. Strong serving and defensive work from Amy Breslin helped the home side regain control.

Áine Treanor delivered an outstanding defensive performance throughout, while Ellena Coffey capped off the match in style by scoring the winning point.

The result sees Mayo maintain their position in 3rd ahead of Dalkey, who had been just one point behind prior to the match. It also marks Mayo’s sixth win in their last seven games, underlining the team’s consistency and growing confidence as the season reaches its decisive stages.

Attention now turns to a huge upcoming fixture against table-toppers Longford next Sunday, April 19th. Longford have been dominant this season, with their only defeat coming against Mayo in the reverse fixture, adding extra intrigue to what promises to be another high-quality contest.

With promotion playoff places still within reach, Mayo know that a victory over Longford, combined with favourable results elsewhere, could see them secure a place in the next stage of the competition.

The club is calling on supporters to come out in force and get behind the team for what could be a season-defining match on Sunday, April 19, in Barnacarrol Community Centre at 2pm.
