Mayo Library is launching Poetry for Non-Poets Club

The much-loved Soundings poetry book was part of the Leaving Cert English curriculum for many years.

Stop all the clocks... Because I could not stop for death... They f**k you up, your mum and dad... I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness... I will arise and go now...

We all have our favourite poems that we return to again and again. There’s nothing like reading the right poem at the right time. Poetry can give us comfort, it can inspire us and it can make us feel seen. And, of course, we all want to share our favourite poems.

This year Mayo County Library is allowing poetry-lovers to do exactly that with its new Poetry for Non-Poets Club. The idea is for a group to meet regularly to read and talk about your favourite poets and poem.

This is not a group for poets – it is for poetry lovers to share their love of great poetry. How this will be done will be decided by the club. Maybe we will focus on one poet per meeting or maybe on a genre of poetry such as love poems or maybe on a great poetry collection. Or maybe you want to introduce to a poet that you love but the rest of the world has forgotten.

So if you love a handful of Heaney or a sprinkling of Shelley or loads of Longfellow or even a modicum of Milligan (Spike that is), this is your chance to share your passion.

If you are interested in joining, please email avaughan@mayococo.ie. Numbers will be limited in order to keep the club intimate and fun.
