Mayo FC girls go top with convincing win over Dundalk

The Mayo FC under-17 girls team continued their unbeaten start to Phase 2 with an impressive 4-1 win over Dundalk this afternoon.
Ryan Merchant’s side were dominant from kick-off and scored three first half goals inside a devastating six-minute spell to seize control.
Caoimhe O’Donnell, whose set piece deliveries caused havoc all game, whipped in corner in, which was knocked by Zara Newell into the path of Niamh Curran, who hooked it over her shoulder and into the net on 21 minutes.
Leah Kilcullen doubled their advantage four minutes later before O’Donnell was quickest to react to a loose Dundalk pass in the backline to make it 3-0 on 27 minutes.
Newell, Kilcullen and Emily Coleman all had opportunities to extend their lead but were denied thanks to several good saves from the overworked Dundalk goalkeeper Luisa Silva De Presbiteris.
The Louth side were much better in the second half and pulled a goal back when Sophie Levins caught Jane Moran off her line with a well taken lob, but Mayo put the game beyond doubt on 64 minutes as Emily Coleman captialised on an underhit backpass and rounded the goalkeeper to put Mayo top of the table after four games played.
