Mayo FC fall to first league defeat

Two first-half defensive errors and Mayo’s failure to turn possession into chances proved decisive as Letterkenny Rovers recorded a 3-0 victory at Leckview Park on Saturday.
Mayo were missing injured pair James McGrath and Connor McCarthy and, although they saw plenty of the ball, they lacked a finishing touch when opportunities came their way.
Letterkenny took an early lead from an unlikely source – a Mayo corner. The visitors lost possession cheaply in the home penalty area and were caught by the quick clearance. Ronan McHugh raced clear and calmly beat Matthew Fox to put Rovers ahead.
Things got worse on 17 minutes. Mayo failed to deal with another situation inside their own area and Luke Parkes was left with the opportunity to finish at the back post for 2-0.
Mayo had chances to reduce the deficit before the interval. Seán McAteer, Aiden Coyle and Ben Edeh all found themselves in positions from which they might have done better, but Letterkenny survived without conceding.
Mayo controlled possession for long periods after the break, but Letterkenny sat behind the ball and Mayo struggled to find the movement or final pass needed to break them down.
For all their possession, Mayo failed to create a clear opportunity during the second half. Their passing was also below par, allowing Letterkenny to defend relatively comfortably.
The absence of McCarthy was particularly evident. Mayo lacked his composure around the penalty area and could not find an alternative route to goal. Surprisingly, O’Neill maintained his original approach rather than making a significant tactical change as Letterkenny continued to frustrate his side.
The home side added a third in stoppage time. Mayo stopped when the assistant referee raised his flag, but the referee overruled the decision and play continued. Shane McNamee took full advantage and finished well past Fox.
